Officials investigate cause of train derailment in Cramerton

People who were evacuated Monday near a train derailment in downtown Cramerton have been allowed back home. Early Tuesday morning, crews had removed most of the damaged cars and were working to replace damaged tracks. The incident happened along 8th Avenue around 4:45 p.m. on Monday. There were three locomotives and 121 cars, 19 of which were derailed.

Mint Hill: In Case Of Fire, Good Luck With Water Supply

A lack of residential fire hydrants has one family worried for their safety. The Town of Mint Hill has one fire department with six full-time staff members and 84 volunteers. It has a high rating, but it's tough to fight fires when there's no water around. "We have nothing, basically, to protect us," said Mint Hill resident Roman Tsiukes. "We do have a fire department. It's an excellent fire department, but without resources, what good are they."

Wilmington Fire Department rescue homeless woman from Cape Fear River

Firefighters with the Wilmington Fire Department helped rescue a homeless woman who was clinging to a wooden piling in the Cape Fear River early Sunday morning. According to Cpl. Kevin Smith with the WPD, a passerby heard a woman calling for help from the water along Riverfront Park in the area of the USCG Dilligence. Firefighters helped Mary Strable, 42, c limb out of the river. Strable was taken to the hospital where she was evaluated and treated.

Former Columbus County elementary school counselor pleads guilty to arson, fraud

An elementary school counselor in Columbus County plead guilty to wire fraud and arson in federal court Monday and he still faces first-degree murder charges. Michael Brown, a counselor at Chadbourn Elementary School, was already facing a charge of murder from March 2010. He's accused of shooting Larry Towns at Five Point s, a Christian Counseling Center that Brown owns.

Witnesses describe explosive sound before Moncks Corner gymnastics center fire

Some junior Olympic gold medal winners from the lowcountry likely won't have a place to train for the time being, because of an early morning fire Tuesday. Witnesses outside a Moncks Corner building that houses Olympia Gymnastics say they heard a loud boom around 12:30 a.m.

Longtime Lady's Island St. Helena fire chief passes away

A longtime firefighter with the Lady's Island St. Helena Fire District has died. Ret. Chief Clayton R. Ellis passed away Monday morning after a long battle with cancer, according to the fire department. He is survived by his wife Melinda, who is also a member of the Lady's Island St. Helena Fire District, and a large extended family.

Charleston's new fire chief being introduced

Charleston residents are getting a chance to meet their new fire chief. Mayor Joe Riley on Tuesday will formally introduce Karen Brack to residents of the city. She began her job as the city's new fire chief on Monday. Brack comes to Charleston after serving as deputy chief in Eugene, Ore.

Myrtle Beach area man sentenced to 30 years in prison in beating death, house fire

A Myrtle Beach area man was ordered to serve 30 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to murder, burglary and arson charges in the 2011 death of a 65-year-old man, whose body was found in his burning home, according to authorities.
