Rowan County: Off-duty firefighters rescue 6 trying to escape capsized boat

File, a Liberty Fire Department volunteer firefighter, jumped in the water with his friend Michael Hodgson, a Salisbury firefighter. They pulled one woman to their boat who they said appeared to have difficulties keeping her head above water. Ketchie dove in with a life jacket and rescued a man who yelled that he could not swim. "You try to stay calm yourself, but in honesty, so much goes through your head at a time like that," he said.

Fleetwood Falls house fire sparked by lightning

In the first hours of Monday morning, Linda Killian huddled with her neighbors in the pouring rain outside her home, watching lightning tear across the sky and the top of her house burn. All things considered, Killian said she feels blessed. "The house is damaged, and it's a tragedy," said Killian. "But it could have been much, much worse. My children aren't planning a funeral today."

The fire is producing heavy smoke and ash-like debris and motorists are advised to stay out of the area.

Fire destroys St. Helena home

A new emergency services substation planned for the Oakwood-Windsor area is not going where an Aiken County land owner envisioned when he deeded land to the Montmorenci fire department five years ago.
