Woman escapes fire in North Wilkesboro
A woman sleeping in a second floor apartment on Fourth Street in North Wilkesboro escaped injury this morning when the structure caught on fire. Megan Brooks was asleep in one of three bedrooms in the apartment when she was awakened by her mother, Patricia Brooks, at 10:15. The two were then able to escape the burning apartment.

Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department dedicates new station to community 
A fire department celebrated renovations by dedicating its station back to the community it serves. The Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department hosted an open house for its improved fire station Sunday. Community members and county officials attended the celebration. Visitors toured the new station equipped with a new parking lot, administrative and storage rooms.

Guil-Rand Fire Department hosts fire safety camp for children 
Some kids in the Tar Heel state are learning what it takes to be a firefighter. The Guil-Rand Fire Department is hosting its annual fire camp this week, which is also designed to teach them fire safety. Firefighters are teaching campers about not playing with anything that might cause a fire and what to do if their clothes catch o n fire. Campers will also take part in an obstacle course to teach them the physical demands of being a firefighter.

River Falls Fire Department seeks new home 
River Falls Fire Department Chief David Embry said Wednesday he is hopeful that he can find a new headquarters for the department after its former building was condemned. In the meantime, he is concerned that his 23 volunteer firefighters don't have a central place to s tore equipment and several firetrucks in the fire district in northern Greenville County.

St. Johns firefighters receiving award after performing CPR on puppy 
Pet Helpers will be honoring the St. Johns Fire Department today for their life-saving efforts of a family pet. The St. Johns Fire Department performed CPR on a puppy using a special mask after responding to a house fire on July 11. Pet Helpers will present an Award of Appreciation to the firefighters today, July 26, at 2 p.m. at the Pet Helpers Adoption Center.
