On May 7, 2011  Firefighters from all over North Carolina attended The Sixth Annual North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in downtown Raleigh. The event started with a large parade of fire apparatus on Hillsborough Street and concluded at the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Memorial at Nash Square.  There was a memorial service at 1:00 p.m.

The names of two fallen firefighters were added to over 225 members of the state’s fire service who have died in the line of duty.  Chad Eric Greene, 34, died on November 4, 2009, after responding to a motor vehicle crash. He was the Deputy Chief of Union Cross Fire Department in Forsyth County.  Firefighter Richard Adam Miller, 24, died on December 29, 2009, while participating in physical fitness training at Belmont Fire Department Headquarters in Gaston County.  A wreath  was placed in honor of the fallen heroes by the children of the fallen firefighters and family members. Each Year North Carolina pays honor to all their firefighters who gallantly lost their lives while protecting the people and property of the great state of North Carolina.
