The Trendelenburg myth

Bradley Dean | 07/25/2010

Sometimes the science and the street have trouble communicating. The Trendelenburg position was originally used to improve surgical exposure of the pelvic organs, credited to the German surgeon Friedrick Trendelenburg (1844-1924). During World War I... Read More...

Train like we are in it: functional exercise

Tim Deppen | 07/25/2010

I’m pretty much like every firefighter believing in the ideology of, “we should train like we’re in it.” Everything we do should be mimicking the incidents we respond to.   As firefighters we must be equipped, trained and physically able to do... Read More...

Rehab, it’s no longer just for ‘quitters’

Health and Wellness
DAVID GREENE | 01/11/2010

We will spend this article examining an issue that no one likes to talk about on the fire ground. Rehabilitation or “rehab” used to be a place where exhausted firefighters who could not continue to function were sent.

Rehab continues to have negative connotations associated with its use. We may be disappointed to learn that our favorite movie star or celebrity has entered rehab in order to battle an unwanted addiction. Likewise, in the fire service, years ago, the incident commander sending you to rehab was synonymous with your mom sending you to your room.

Fire investigation for the First Responder

Fire
Zane D. Poindexter | 04/26/2010

One of the most important components to a successful fire service response is a properly completed origin and cause fire investigation. We state this as fact for two important reasons: to recognize an intentionally set fire and to subsequently assist with placing those individuals responsible into the criminal justice system, and also to properly identify certain dangerous practices or faulty equipment that may spark accidental fires. Neither of these end results could be possible without proper scene preservation and other important functions conducted by the first responding crews.

Scene preservation

If proper scene preservation is not a priority, and there is little thought and direction as to how to proceed after the fire has been deemed “under control,” the case may suffer. Fire pattern analysis, evidence collection and a complete scene examination may become much harder, or even deemed impossible by the investigator, dependent upon each individual scene.

Small arms ammunition can be dangerous to responders

Rescue
Lenny Yox | 10/18/2009

During the past year, more people than ever before have been buying larger than normal quantities of ammunition and reloading components. There are many reasons for those purchases -- and I will not try to cover them in this article.

I will, however, try to bring out some of the additional dangers posed to us, the responders on a fire or other emergency.

Benefits of the Electronic Medical Record
RESCUE and EMS

EMS
Michael Arntz | 10/18/2009

Are electronic medical records necessary in the healthcare? How can electronic medical records be managed more effectively? This article will address those questions.

Electronic medical records (EMRs) have received a lot of attention recently from the healthcare community. Records are a very important part of the healthcare process and using computers wisely can only benefit the patient. If the proper information is gathered at registration this patient information will be reviewed by the healthcare provider. This information can be transferred to other providers or the hospital or other clinics if needed. This definitely saves time for both the patient and the front desk personnel and the healthcare provider.
