Tramway firefighter seriously injured after fall from ladder

A North Carolina firefighter was seriously injured Monday after falling from a ladder while battling a house fire. Tramway Firefighter Matt Smith was on the ladder, battling a blaze at a vacant home when he fell and was transported to the hospital, according to WFJA. Firefighter Smith is being treated for his injuries which are non-life threatening, but considered very serious. The home was gutted, the second floor hardest hit. Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. The home was reportedly vacant since Friday.



Fire leads to Northwest Raleigh apartment evacuations

An electrical fire forced several people who live in a Northwest Raleigh apartment complex to evacuate their homes Tuesday evening. Firefighters responded to the Mission Millbrook Apartment Homes, on Julie Court, around 8 p.m. Residents said they heard sparks, smelled burning and saw smoke coming from an empty bottom unit.


Lions honor Rocky Mount firefighter, police officer

A local firefighter and police officer were selected by their coworkers and honored Tuesday with the help of the Rocky Mount Luncheon Lions Club. Rocky Mount police Cpl. James Duncan and fire Capt. Michael Strange were selected respectively as the police officer and firefighter of the year for 2012. The respective chiefs for both Duncan and Strange, who have worked for the city about 10 years, said the men each had a willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. "He often goes the extra step in helping change a tire or give a few dollars to a homeless person, so they'll have a place to stay for the night," Police Chief James Moore said.


Henderson County 911 dispatcher writes crime novels

Jana McGraw spends her days — and a lot of nights — on the phone with people who need to hear a calming voice. McGraw is a 911 dispatcher for Henderson County. She fields emergency calls and provides a soothing voice to help people through some of the toughest times of their lives. Now McGraw, 50, is using a different kind of voice. The Mountain Home resident is fulfilling a lifelong dream of being an author, lending her voice to characters she's imagined her entire life.



Fire damages Dorchester Co. convenience store

A fire at a bar in Dorchester County is under investigation Wednesday morning. The fire broke out a little before 5:30 a.m. at "The Sands" which is located near the corner of Highway 17A and Highway 61. The Old Fort Fire Department says the fire started on the second floor, a living area undergoing renovations.


Rock Hill woman charged with arson after house fire

A 57-year-old Rock Hill woman is accused of arson after deputies say she set her house on fire Sunday and then stood in the yard to watch it burn before she was dragged away by neighbors. Donna Lee Cearfoss is charged with third-degree arson. Wednesday morning, she was held at the York County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond after her arrest on Tuesday. Deputies were responded to a house fire on Gordon Road near Aziza Road around 8:30 after receiving word that someone might be trapped inside, according to a York County Sheriff's report. When police arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames, and no one inside.


Fire damages West Florence Home

The Florence County Sheriff's Office investigates a fire that badly damaged a home shortly before 8:00 p.m. Tuesday on Hoffmeyer Road Near Quail Pointe Drive. Fifteen firefighters responded to the scene and had the fire contained in about an hour according to West Florence Fire Department Captain Anthony Fox. Nobody was injured. Fox said the home was reportedly vacant at the time of the fire.
